Good ole Eyeball MkI and MkII has been working well, as has Eardrum MkIII. Both are unbelievably reliable devices that don't rely on the aircraft transmitting data from far away.
Eye patches aren't necessary for MkI or MkII, in fact they seem to operate far better without them.

A quick look at Termoticon shows an in depth view on how they work...
