Qantas reduces Territory services

Australia’s national carrier will drop a significant amount of return services to the Northern Territory from August 2012.

Qantas Domestic CEO Mr Lyell Strambi highlighted poor route performance triggered the route reductions.

“We regret any impact these changes may have however despite various strategies these routes remain poor performers.”

The following changes will be made:
• Qantas will reduce services between Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Cairns from 14 return services per week to seven return services per week, effective 1 September 2012;

• Qantas will reduce services between Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Perth from four return services per week to two return services per week, effective 1 September. This service will then be suspended from 28 October 2012;

• Jetstar will reduce services between Darwin and Sydney from up to 11 return services per week to seven return services per week, effective 16 August 2012;

• Jetstar will reduce services between Darwin to Denpasar from up to 11 return services per week to eight return services per week, effective 16 August 2012.

Its not all bad QF/JQ news...

This is in addition to the return of B744s on the SYD-PER-SYD and extra A330s on the MEL-PER-MEL:

Qantas and Jetstar will increase capacity on east coast routes by up to 25,800 seats per week during 2012/13.

Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said the Group was focused on delivering the best network, frequency and service for customers in key markets.

Qantas will add:
- 11 return services per week between Sydney and Melbourne from 9 July 2012
- 11 return services per week between Sydney and Brisbane from 23 August 2012

Jetstar will add:
- 21 return services per week between Sydney and Melbourne from 16 August 2012
- Seven return services per week between Sydney and Adelaide from 15 November 2012
- Seven return services per week between Sydney and Ballina-Byron from 18 April 2013
- Seven return services per week between Sydney and the Gold Coast from 18 April 2013
- Three return services per week between Adelaide and the Gold Coast from 18 April 2013
- Four return services per week between Newcastle and the Gold Coast from 18 April 2013

“The introduction of these services in 2012/13 will result in an increase of more than 496,000 additional Jetstar seats and 400,000 Qantas seats per year along the east coast,” said Mr Joyce.

“The additional capacity reflects the Qantas Group’s commitment to ensure our customers have the greatest choice, flexibility and product offering across a strong domestic network. We know that network and frequency are vital to customer satisfaction.

“With Qantas and Jetstar we have two complementary brands that enable us to respond to opportunities and changing market conditions.

“Qantas is increasing capacity and frequency on key business routes to provide greater flexibility for customers who prefer the benefits of travelling with a full service carrier.

“Jetstar is increasing capacity on key leisure routes, building on its tremendous success of offering low fares into holiday destinations like the Gold Coast.

“We know from experience that increasing the number of low fares in these markets will stimulate new travel demand.”

Jetstar adds more Tasmanian flights

Budget airline Jetstar is boosting the number of flights to Tasmania.

The airline will start increasing services from August 16.

Seven additional return flights a week will run between Sydney and Hobart, with an extra seven between Melbourne and Launceston.

The budget carrier says there will also be more flights between Sydney and Launceston and Melbourne and Hobart in November, in time for Tasmania's peak summer tourism period.

The increase means there will be an extra 408,000 seats between Tasmania and other states next financial year.

Jetstar spokesman David Koczkar says there is a strong demand for access to the state.

"At the moment we're focussing our growth today on flights between Hobart and Launceston to Melbourne and Sydney which are our biggest markets."

"It'll provide more access to those markets, lower fares. It'll also be better connections to South-East Asia, China and New Zealand."

The tourism industry has blamed a lack of access to the state for recent fare increases.

Fares are now expected to come down.

Luke Martin from the Tourism Industry Council says the extra flights will boost capacity by 20 per cent.

By summer he says that flight capacity into the state will be at an all-time high.

"We saw a 50,000 decline in visitor numbers last year and a lot of that is due to access putting that cap on people's ability to enter the state," he said.

"So if we can turn that around it's going to continue to give incentives to people to want to invest in tourism products, it's going to give people some certainty about the state of the industry."
Tourism Minister Scott Bacon has welcomed the announcement.

"It'll mean more services, more competition and more people into Tasmania, into both Hobart and Launceston and it is fantastic news."

So by my calculations by peak season JQ will make:

HBA-MEL x 7
LST-MEL x 5.5
HBA-SYD x 4
LST-SYD x 3
HBA-OOL x 1
LST-BNE x 1

Looks like extra HBA-SYD and LST-MEL start on Aug 16, with extra HBA-MEL and LST-SYD starting Nov 15.

Does anyone know which CNS-AYQ service gets the chop is it the first the 07.25 or the 10.45 one as nothing is showing up on QF online timetable.
