I found this for you:

I hope some others will come forth with some personal experiences of JFK for you.

you need a car for a start, bayswater is a good spot, then you have Howard beach for the banking shots & costco for approach.

not the easiest airport to spot at, best you contact someone who spots there and get them to assist you, or it will be a pointless exercise if you don't get a car.

NYC Aviation is the source of info.

Used to live in NYC and spotted with the NYC Aviation crew.

May will be nice spotting weather. If you're going to go out on a weekend, check the forums to see who else will be about. Perhaps even get some contacts.

For JFK you don't necessarily need a car. You can get to most locations by train and bus. If they switch runways a car is helpful, but again, you can use public transport. I spotted at JFK over a dozen times with no car.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Matt, not sure if you're still planning on going, but if you do it's definitely worth introducing yourself on the forums that Will mentioned before you go - I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who can show you the best spots, especially if you chip in some money for petrol or buy them some lunch.
