Planes on a Pole.
You used to see planes on a pole near a lot of airports, and for that matter, an historic locomotive in country towns.
I remember seeing a DH Sea Venom at Bankstown every day as I drove past on my way to work. You don't see many these days, but at the California Science Centre in Los Angeles, they have planes on poles which would be hard to beat. In Australia, Health and Safety has changed the use of putting planes on poles.
Both the Sea Venoms at Bankstown and Nowra nearly fell off the poles after rot (wooden Fuselages) set in. The Spitfire that is on the pole in Perth is actually plastic/Fiberglass. The historical significance of aircraft has cuased a large number of pole sitters to be removed, restored and placed under cover. eg: DC-2 in Albury. Off the top of my head the pole sitters I remember are: Sabre at Raymond Terrace NSW (removed for restoration) Vampire at Forbes NSW Vampire at Tammworth NSW Vampire at Wingham NSW Vampire at HDH Bankstown NSW Iroquois at Nowra NSW Firefly at Griffith NSW Canberra at Willowbank Qld. DC-3 at Cairns Qld. (I think it has been removed) Greg |

Unfortunately that is no longer there as it has been replaced by an Emirates A380.

Hey Tim. I remember some aircraft 'guarding' the entrance to RAAF Amberley when I was a kid, can't remember if they were on poles or on concrete platforms though. Love the photo of the United jet - what type is that?? Cheers, Rowan
