5am this morning 34L

Hey guys, I live only about 800mtrs from the end of 34L and this morning I heard a large jet doing what I thought would have either been a go around or very impressive take off performance (not building rattling loud) but definitely had the high power buzz saw noise happening.

This happened just after 5am and also about 10-12 minutes later... Any ideas?

Webtrack shows BA15 a 777 and the QF 6 a 747 doing missed approaches. I suspect fog. The buzz saw sound was a few of Rolls Royce's at their finest. Flat out.

Steve,
A limited number of arrivals have always been permitted between 0500 and 0600. Certain conditions exist, such as they have to be able to accept Rwy 34L, and can only use idle reverse thrust I believe.

Thanks for that, makes a lot of sense, however in a missed approach situation or whatever, the climbout noise must drive the nearby neighbours nuts, even though the aircraft would have gained considerable altitude.

Wasn't too bad as he was already quite high up as you suggested... Didn't wake us, we both just noticed it.

Absolutely.

I know of a number of occasions aircraft operating in the shoulder period have made approaches with right on their limiting tailwind, only to get told at a couple of hundred feet it has increased to above the limit, so they make the noisy go-around.

Same as aircraft that are running a few minutes late for curfew at the end of the day. Instead of landing on 34L, the clock ticks over on final and so they go around from say 500ft, instead making noise all over the norther suburbs during the go around rather than the low noise from landing at the airport.

The same event happen yesterday morning when both QFA 6 (VH-OJA) & 2 (VH-OJS) on approach to 34L elected to abort the landing, due to low cloud/mist, climbed away and headed for Melbourne as did the two United flights.
