Fabulous photos Grahame - shows not only the change in aircraft but how much YSSY has changed (and how much green grass there was!). Thanks for posting them!

Local cargo operators in the early 1980s operated a mixture of old props, reconfigured passenger aircraft and surprisingly corporate jets. Most of these photographs were taken at Essendon, which became more of a GA, Charter and Cargo airport after Tullamarine opened. It seemed strange that the Lear 35A was so popular for cargo as the cargo capacity was limited. I guess they were used for priority cargo to make it pay. Back then you could check in with Airport Management, sign a form or two, and you were free to walk around the aprons and photograph - wonderful access. The then Department Of Transport operated out of Essendon back then, with a fleet of Fokker F28-100 (3 aircraft at one stage used for calibration), BAe125-700B, Rockwell Commander 680E, Merlin IIB SA26At and Beech Bonanza 36. The next upload will include these DOT aircraft in their own departmental livery, with one shot of the new livery on an F28-100 when they became the Civil Aviation Authority.

Air Express Bristol 170 VH-ADL at Essendon in January 1980. I remember making an Airfix kit model of this aircraft as a child.

Cargo DC3 VH-MMF at Essendon - always the workhorse.

Ipec Argosy AW650 VH-IPB at Essendon in November 1980 - an unusual but interesting aircraft. The front double doors opened to
allow front on loading of cargo pallets.

Ipec DC9-33F VH-IPF at Essendon in December 1983. I think this aircraft was one of the Ex TAA or Ansett DC9s.

TNT Learjet 35A VH-AJS at Sydney in February 1982. TNT operated from the hanger near the hanger that was demolished for A380
operation in Sydney.

Wards Express Falcon 50 VH-BRR at Essendon in January 1980 - note the full cargo door fitted to this Falcon.

I won't directly post photos as I don't want to steal any of Grahame' s thunder, his collection is quite amazing.

Some of you may be interested in some of the pics at...

Wow what great photos, I remember back when I first went to the USA and I flew on North West out of Sydney that was in 1992.

They don't even come here anymore of course.

Great memories.

Great collection there Grahame. It's like opening up the time capsule and taking out all the things and reminisce. I must say i like the Air Niugini A300 with the bird. Probably one of their best livery to date.

Grahame,

On page 5 , the shot of the B727 VH-ANA

They referred to this as the " Shooting Star " scheme

Terrific memories of the best era in Australian aviation, we won't see such quality again.

My oldest Mascot sides are from 1960, a TAA Viscount and a TAA Electra with the orange dayglo tail.

In the early 1980s, the then Department of Transport operated a small fleet of different types, ranging from a Beech Bonanza to Fokker F28-100s. They were based at Essendon and had their own maintenance facility capable of servicing the F28-100s. It is a little surprising to see the size and range of types that were operated back then.

I am happy to be corrected, but I think that Department Of Transport (DOT) became the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and today Air Services Australia. There was also the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) as they issued my Flight Crew Licence on the 6th May 1968 aged 16 (now CASA).

Essendon was always great to visit in the 1980s as there was a great range of aircraft to photograph, DOT, the cargo operators, GA and a number of historic aircraft. The replica "Southern Cross" was there at one stage.

DOT F28-100 VH-ATD at Essendon in November 1980

DOT F28-100 VH-ATG at Essendon in September 1985 - the inbuilt front stair was very useful as gate lounges with aerobridges did not
exits at airports. There was always a walk across the tarmac to the terminal, not the best when it was raining.

DOT F28-100 VH-ATE at Essendon in December 1983 - plenty of aerials for calibration work.

DOT F28-100 VH-ATD at Essendon in November 1980 - nose to nose with VH-ATE

DOT F28-100 VH-ATG at Essendon in December 1990 - I always liked the look of the F28 and they were great to fly in.

DOT F28-100 VH-ATG at Essendon in December 1985 - DOT had the own hanger at Essendon and performed maintenance right up to
the F28s.

DOT BAe125-700B VH-JFT at Essendon in December 1987 - Qantas operated the original HS125 back in the early 1970s when I first
applied to the Qantas Cadet Scheme.

DOT Commander 695A VH-LTO at Essendon in September 1985

DOT Commander 695A VH-LTI at Essendon in December 1983 - probably one of the first aircraft with winglets that I can remember.

DOT Commander VH-LTJ at Essendon in October 1991 - looks to be a fairly well equiped cockpit for the day.

The Department of Transport (DOT) became the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the livery on their aircraft was changed.

CAA F28-100 VH-ATG at the first Avalon Air Show in October 1992

And for a change of tack, here is a shot I found of the Queen Elizabeth IIs BAe146 used on her visit to Australia in 1986. I think she
flew here on a commercial aircraft and used the BAe146 once in Australia. I don't remember seeing a Queen's Flight aircraft in Australia
before or since.
