Torres Strait Air (Horn Island) has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Britten-Norman (Bembridge) for ten new BN-2 Islanders to replace its fleet of seven previous-generation units of the type.

The aircraft will be assembled at Britten-Norman's new site at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and be delivered within the next five years. The carrier signed up for the manufacturer's "Green Futures" option, which will allow it to trade in the conventionally-powered Islanders for zero-emission variants as soon as they become commercially available.

"Our commitment to this investment is for the people of Torres Strait and their future. The world is challenged with increasing sea levels, and our island communities, our people's homes, are at sea level. Every effort must be made to offset carbon emissions. We act now whilst continuing to provide the highest levels of aviation safety, comfort, efficiency, reliability, and affordability to our people and those who come to our pristine waters and beautiful Islands," Chief Executive Daniel Takai said.

Torres Strait Air operates charter flights across the Torres Strait and Cape York in northern Australia. The indigenous-owned carrier is also certified to fly to Papua New Guinea. Its fleet comprises seven active BN-2s, one Commander, and three Cessna (single piston) C206s. Torres Strait Air is the only BN-2 operator in Australia.
