Qantas announced today that, as a result of improving demand, it would begin increasing capacity across a range of domestic routes from 29 March 2010.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said the move would see the airline add more than 340,000 seats over the following 12 months, as it restored capacity removed in response to the economic downturn.

"We are seeing some improvements in domestic demand and so the time is right to begin restoring capacity to ensure we are well placed to meet that demand," Mr Joyce said.

"The changes will see the addition of a total 19 return services across selected routes, while capacity will be restored on others by upgrading from Boeing 737 to larger Boeing 767 aircraft.

"Combined with Jetstar's recently announced domestic growth plans for 2010, new routes for QantasLink, and the assessment of new growth opportunities for Qantas, the Qantas Group remains best placed in terms of offering customers multiple airlines, high frequency services, a genuinely comprehensive network and extremely competitive fares."

Additional services will be introduced on the following routes:
* Adelaide-Melbourne - 3 per week (currently 64 per week), 1,200 seats per week
* Brisbane-Sydney - 6 per week (currently 140 per week), 2,016 seats per week
* Brisbane-Townsville - 3 per week (currently 33 per week), 912 seats per week
* Melbourne-Perth - 1 per week (currently 45 per week), 288 seats per week
* Sydney-Ayers Rock# - 1 per week (currently 7 per week), 336 seats per week
Upgraded Services * Brisbane-Cairns - six per week, 912 seats per week
* Brisbane-Melbourne - six per week, 912 seats per week

Mr Joyce said Qantas would also increase existing daily Cityflyer services between Adelaide and Brisbane.

"From 29 December, we will add four B737 services per week to the current 20, increasing capacity by 20 per cent, or nearly 70,000 seats per year, on this key inter-city route," he said.

"We will continue to monitor demand with a view to restoring further capacity at the appropriate time."

Why are the ADL-BNE described separately to the others?

Because they are starting 29 dec not end of march for BNE-ADL.The article is about the NS10 season increases but BNE-ADL is not in this time frame.

I'd be more open to the option that it is a typo, and should be 29 March for the ADL-BNE. Would seem strange to me for QF to be announcing over a year in advance that you are adding a few extra weekly services on one domestic route. Maybe the ADL-BNE is separate becuase the others are restoring some capacity that was cut back last year, where as the ADL-BNE is a genuine increase?

It could be 29 December this year not 29/12/2010 for the extra BNE-ADL flights

Seems it is 29 March for the ADL-BNE. QF schedules show additional four per week ADL-BNE from this date.

BNE-ADL 1055-1415 (Mon,Wed,Thu,Fri)
ADL-BNE 1250-1440 (Mon,Wed,Thu,Fri)

At the commencement of the current schedules on 25 October, there were 20 weekly flights scheduled between ADL/BNE/ADL. For the week commencing 28 Dec there are 4 additional flights, namely QF1221/1222 on M W Su and QF 665/656 on Sat. The next week there are only 3 additional QF1221/1222 and so on.

So until March they are putting on additional flights but only as required.

Now that Qantas has started CBR-DRW 3x a week be great if they did 3x a week to CNS as well.

Add to the list effective May 3, MEL-KTA 1100-1405/KTA-MEL 1010-1615 on Mondays with 73H.

Also SYD-KTA starting mid-may sometime but not finalised yet. Heard a rumor about DRW-KTA, not sure if it is accurate.

Qantas start more routes out of Karratha

Dont think this has been mentioned but Qantas will start a once weekly flight from Melbourne to Karratha from May 3 and a once weekly flight from Sydney to Karratha from June 17.

Qantas announced today it would increase capacity to the North West regional centres of Karratha, Paraburdoo and Port Hedland in the coming months, including the launch of a new Port Hedland-Melbourne route in September.

Qantas Regional General Manager Western Australia, Mr Ian Gay, said other additional services would include:
- three Perth-Paraburdoo return morning services, operating on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday mornings, increasing the number of weekly services on the route to 24, from July; and
- one Karratha-Brisbane return service operating on Wednesdays, resulting in two return services on the route each week from September.

Mr Gay said the services were a response to increased demand from the mining and energy sectors, and would provide new opportunities for regional Western Australian communities.

“Qantas has been operating Brisbane-Karratha services since 2008, and launched Melbourne-Karratha and Sydney-Karratha services in the last two months. We have also serviced Broome from Sydney and Melbourne since April 2004 and March 2003 respectively,” he said.

“We are very pleased to now add Port Hedland to the list of east-west routes that Qantas business and leisure customers can fly to direct from the eastern states, and appreciate the support of the Town of Port Hedland, which assisted us in ensuring this new service can commence as soon as possible.”

Mr Gay also said Qantas had made a significant investment in improving its airport infrastructure in both Perth and regional Western Australian ports.

“Qantas has invested $75 million in redeveloping the domestic terminal at Perth Airport including installing three additional baggage carousels, six new check-in counters, a large A330 aerobridge, the upgrading of a gate from B737 to B767 capability, extra seating space, and a 1500m2 stand alone security screening facility to ease congestion at the terminal,” he said.

“We have also improved the airport experience in several regional ports by installing QuickCheck kiosks in Broome, Kalgoorlie, Karratha and Port Hedland earlier this year, which, along with automated gate boarding, is providing customers with a faster boarding process.”
