Default Qantaslink Emergency Landing

Quote:
A QANTAS plane has been forced to make an emergency landing at Sydney Airport after the undercarriage overheated.
QantasLink QF2260, which was travelling from Sydney to Lord Howe Island, was forced to return to Sydney "due to a technical issue with the air-conditioning system", a spokeswoman for the airline said.
The plane landed at 1.47pm (AEDT) and ambulance crews assessed about 50 passengers for dehydration.

Some passengers reported that the temperature had reached 40 degrees in the cabin.
Passengers and crew were treated for heat exposure at the airport and two passengers were taken to hospital, the Qantas spokeswoman said.
An ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to the airport around 1.30pm today after "reports the temperature inside was quite high,'' he said.
Two female passengers were treated at the scene for dehydration and taken to hospital, in a stable condition.
A spokeswoman for Sydney Airport confirmed a Qantas aircraft landed there this afternoon but would not give any further details.
''I can confirm that there was a Qantas aircraft that landed,'' she said.

I can already point out atleast on inaccuracy in this story...VH-TQS was the aircraft, it only seats 32 passengers. Did quite a few loops just off the coast before returning!

I'm not smart enough to understand their report.

Was it air-con or undercarriage problem?

We were lucky enough to fly to Lord Howe last year (cabin heating was more than comfortable). The big issue looming was that the aircraft used on this run was an older smaller version of the Dash 8 due to runway restrictions on the island. This aircraft was due to reach the end of its serviceable life - I have a recollection of this happening in March this year. The other aircraft in Qantaslink's fleet weren't suitable. As of last March no alternative aircraft had been determined and the islanders were concerned that this vital link would be interrupted. Another part of the issue was also waiting for the NSW government to negotiate a new contract for whoever the service provider was going to be. Does anyone know if there have been any developments with these issues?

TQG has more hours on it than TQS, and neither are at the end of their service lives.

My sources tell me that it was a failed ACM which caused the problem. Straight bleed air would have made conditions in the cabin very uncomfortable until the crew were in a position to switch it off.

Thanks Max and Hugh, good news all round. Flying into and out of Lord Howe is absolute magic. And I have to say the service on board was amazing - one very busy flight attendant on both legs.
