I have heard from various people on the flights that I have taken on QF9/10 that in fact a lot of passengers terminate at Perth and no onward flight to the east.

Not surprising, tag flights with domestic legs are hardly popular based on stats
ie August
Brisbane-Cairns 178
Sydney-Canberra 125

Hence why when the 9 turns around at PH sometimes, the ML leg is serviced by a 737.

That's very rare. Usually only happens when an aircraft goes u/s and they need to get the schedule back on track.
