B787-9 Certified By FAA & EASA

Full Article (http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2014-06-16-Boeing-787-9-Dreamliner-Earns-FAA-EASA-Certification)

EVERETT, Wash., June 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787-9 Dreamliner has been certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for commercial service. Boeing is now in the final stages of preparing for the first 787-9 delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand.

"Certification is the culmination of years of hard work and a rigorous flight-test program that started with the 787-9's first flight last September," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. "With this validation that the airplane is ready for commercial operations, Boeing along with our airline and leasing customers now look forward to introducing the newest member of the Dreamliner family to passengers around the world."

To earn certification for the 787-9, Boeing undertook a comprehensive test program with five airplanes and more than 1,500 hours of flight testing, plus ground and laboratory testing. Following the rigorous and thorough certification process, the FAA and EASA each granted Boeing an Amended Type Certificate for the 787-9, certifying that the design complies with aviation regulations and is safe and reliable.

From Flightglobal ...

The A350 (http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Airbus%20A350.html) flew Airbus’s usual impressive aerial display, which included some tight turns and slow flypasts. Boeing’s 787-9’s routine was similar to previous Dreamliner (http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Boeing%20787.html) air-show displays, and initially included an impressive touch-and-go followed by a steep, climbing turn.

But Boeing had to remove this manoeuvre from the routine following Monday’s show after Farnborough’s flying control committee deemed it inappropriate for the display.

Boeing is at a loss to explain why this request came despite the manoeuvre having initially been approved during two display-validation flights flown at Farnborough shortly before the show began.

and from the Seattle Times (http://blogs.seattletimes.com/boeing/2014/07/16/dueling-test-planes-for-airbus-and-boeing-at-farnborough-air-show/)...

On the opening day of the Farnborough Air Show, the Boeing 787-9 did a spectacular touch-and-go in the afternoon flying display, coming down and touching the tarmac as if to land, then powering up and climbing steeply away.

On the second day, the Air Show authorities banned that maneuver.
“They got red-carded,” said Airbus test pilot Frank Chapman, speaking on a tour of his A350 flight test jet on Wednesday.

He said the airport authority won’t allow either Airbus or Boeing to do it again this week.

“We can all climb steeply,” said Chapman. “What you mustn’t do is turn straight away (on take-off). If the wing hits the ground, it’s over. Their wingtip was 15 feet off the ground. They don’t like you being close to the ground.”

This was filmed at Moses Lake in Central Washington State. Pretty much an airport in the middle of nowhere. Boeing do a lot of test flights around there, but you would have to be really lucky to be there on the right day, almost the same as Everett, where the runway can either be busy, or pretty dead.

The next longest Dreamliner route is by Ethiopian, from Toronto to Addis Ababa (6,217 nmi).

FLIGHT-TEST 787 BECOMES MUSEUM PIECE

HERITAGE Boeing on 8 November donated one of its original flight
test 787-8s to the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Rolls-Royce Trent
1000-engined MSN ZA003 was used extensively during the
Dreamliner’s interior certification programme, and circumnavigated
the globe several times during the “Dream Tour” in 2011 and 2012.
The airframer plans to donate two more 787s used in its flight test
programme to other museums around the world.

Dreamliner Fuels the Boom in International Flying

His Dreamliner trip was scheduled to depart for Melbourne at 10:30p.m., the same time as United Flight 839, a Boeing 777-200 which was headed to Sydney. While the journey to Sydney is nearly 45 minutes shorter, the 777 burned 7,500 gallons more fuel getting there.

"They burned 238,000 pounds of fuel compared to our 188,000," Jim told me, taking obvious pleasure in being the man who flies the younger, hipper, and waaaaaay more fuel efficient airplane. "The 777 carries 260 passengers our 787-9 carries 252 passengers, 8 less."

A Jetstar Boeing 787-800, registration VH-VKB performing flight JQ-25 from Cairns,QL (Australia) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was enroute at FL430 about 200nm southwest of Guam (Guam) when the crew decided to divert to Guam due a decreasing engine oil quantity indication. The aircraft landed safely in Guam about 30 minutes later.

Maintenance fixed the problem permitting the aircraft to depart Guam after about 3 hours on the ground. The aircraft reached Tokyo with a delay of 3 hours.

The airline reported the crew received some indication prompting the diversion to Guam. Engineers assessed and fixed the issue.

Air India have 787 VT-ANK sitting on the ground at Birmingham Airport in the UK after going tech after arriving from Delhi since 7th Feb !! .. Unusual permutation of conditions needed, Grahame, so not surprising really. Interesting that Boeing self-disclosed.

I remember when we had the two uncommanded dives near Exmouth with the A330s we were told that it was impractical to test every unlikely permutation in modern avionics. I'm confident that every passenger would consider that rationalisation an absurd proposition!

In this day & age, Boeing would have no choice BUT to disclose the information to the authorities. Imagine if they didn't & something DID go wrong...

In reality, airlines don't leave aircraft for that long without shutting them down, so the chances of anything happening are next to none.
