A new video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBmxFWfX1YQ&feature=youtu.be) from Boeing on the testing of the Dreamliner. Although a little promotional, it still gives a good coverage of all aspects of the flight test program.

It would take a cast of hundreds and locations across the globe. Scientific photographers on the ground and in chase planes would capture much of the action. In the end, in addition to rich test data, the Boeing 787 would complete flight testing with incredible images of its journey captured on video. Take a behind the scenes look at flight testing the 787.

On another note, JAL8/7 NRT-BOS has commenced, yesterday, and currently JAL7 is on its way back to NRT (Flightaware (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/JAL7)) with JA822J doing the honours!!

Whilst ANA's first B788 flight went with a lot of 'fanfare' JAL's seems to have widely gone unnoticed!!

I was in Narita on the 23rd April when I thought I will pop outside to the viewing area when I see a very different looking set of wing tips. It finally dawned on me that it was a lovely Boeing product.

Anyway I took a couple of photos. Although they are a bit embarrassing with all the talent that is on the forum. You can tell that I am not a true spotter. But I do have the excuse it started to push back in daylight hours but got dark after 3 AA pushbacks a Thai arrival and Jetstar Arrival.

There is still a problem with Air India deliveries, the compensation for late delivery has still not been settled apparently, and there are completed aircraft ready to go.

Grahame Hutchison
7th June 2012, 05:57 PM
Boeing and Air India have resolved their dispute over compensation for late delivery of the B787 Dreamliner, and the first aircraft will be delivered shortly, with two more before the end of June. The Dreamliner will mainly operate domestically for the first 6-8 weeks, in order to speed up training.

Air India B787 services to Australia should start in August/September, once the Mumbai-London route is underway in August.

The below from our CEO

Boeing continues to make good progress toward completing our first 787-8 Dreamliner. The aircraft’s General Electronic GEnx engines are installed and most of the cabin work is done. Boeing tells me that the 787 is expected to go into the paint hangar later this month, so I want you to be the first to see a rendering of the plane’s livery. Our 787 fleet will feature a customized livery with a unique twist: the gold line that wraps the fuselage will swoop from nose to tail. We are adopting the swoop – inspired by the trademark swoop on each of Boeing’s aircraft – as a tribute to the two companies’ history of working together.

As the first North American carrier to get a Dreamliner, we expect to take delivery of our first 787 in late September, and this aircraft will enter revenue service later in the fall. Our 787 will have 36 seats in United BusinessFirst, 72 seats in United Economy Plus and 111 seats in United Economy, with a cabin color palate of blue and grey, consistent with our other modern airplanes. While the blue and grey interior color palette will be consistent across the fleet, the 787 brings a whole new set of features to improve the customer and employee flying experience, such as improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems.

For more information about the 787, look for an Employee Bulletin that we’ll distribute later today. You may also view more renderings of the 787 livery on Flying Together.

ANA 787s affected by defect in Trent 1000 gearbox

All Nippon Airways (ANA) grounded five of its 11 Boeing 787 (http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Boeing%20787.html) aircraft on 21 July, after being notified by Boeing that there may be a defect in the gearbox of the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine.
"We received a message from Boeing to the effect that there may be an issue with the gearbox on the engines of the 787s in ANA's fleet. No related problems have arisen on our 787s, however we have ascertained that the part at issue is fitted to five of our aircraft," says an ANA spokesman.
It is understood that the issue was first discovered on an engine gear box used for endurance testing on the ground. Some crown gears had shown corrosion, leading to damage to the gear box.

“Boeing is aware of the findings made by Rolls-Royce during engine testing that revealed corrosiion in some crown gears within the gear box that had resulted from changes to a manufacturing process,” says a Boeing spokeswoman when contacted.

She adds that no aircraft will be delivered with affected parts.

The five affected aircraft, registration JA802A, JA806A, JA807A, JA808A, and JA810A, have that component. Both engines on two of the aircraft are affected, while the other three have one affected engine each.
The remaining six 787s in ANA's fleet are not affected. Two of the five affected aircraft were repaired and put back into service on 22 July, says ANA.
The remaining three aircraft however will take "another few weeks to fix" as parts have to be flown in, but the carrier is working with Rolls Royce to speed up the process, says the spokesman.
"Working with Boeing, we will replace the part in question and return our fleet to an operating state as quickly as possible," he adds.
The airline had to cancel two domestic services on 21 July due to the grounding, but is now operating all flights as usual using other aircraft.
Japan Airlines, which has four 787s in its fleet which runs on the General Electric's GEnx-1B engine. says its aircraft are unaffected.
"We do not have to ground our Dreamliners for engine inspections," says its spokeswoman.

ANA say the last two of five grounded Boeing 787 planes will probably resume services within a week after the installation of new parts from Rolls-Royce.

Air New Zealand's initial delivery of B787-9s will be configured with about 300 seats, reflecting a high percentage in Economy. This high Economy ratio is because they will be used on the Asian routes, which are primarily leisure routes. The first 10 deliveries of the stretched version of the B787 will be in mid 2014.

BOEING says federal regulators are investigating after one of its 787 jets had an engine issue that sparked a fire in South Carolina but the company remains confident about its safety.

The jet is one of Boeing's most critical products.

The Chicago company delivered the first 787, known as the Dreamliner, last year following several years of design and production delays.

Boeing on Sunday said a 787 had an engine issue on Saturday while undergoing pre-flight runway testing in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The Post and Courier newspaper of Charleston reported that debris from the aircraft fell on the runway at Charleston International Airport and sparked a fire in the nearby grass, which closed the airport for more than an hour.

Airlines have set record orders for the jet, because its lightweight, high-tech design is expected to offer travellers more comfort, provide airlines significant fuel savings and open new routes.

Company spokesman Marc Birtel says the company can't disclose the nature of the engine issue due to rules surrounding the investigation.

"While the investigation is in its early stages, we are unaware of any operational issue that would present concerns about the continued safe operation of in-service 787s powered by GE engines," Boeing said in a statement.

"However, should the investigation determine a need to act, Boeing has the processes in place to take action and will do so appropriately."

The pressure is on for companies to deliver a successful fuel-efficient plane.

Boeing competitor Airbus on Friday announced another delay for its A350 aircraft, which is made with a significant amount of carbon composites and is considered a potential rival.

Boeing has its headquarters in Chicago but has a campus in South Carolina where it produces some of the 787 jetliners.

In our Employee news this morning:

Posted August 20, 2012

Our first Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off from Boeing’s Paine Field in Everett, Wash., for its first test flight on Sunday.

Boeing pilots flew our 787 around the Seattle area for more than three hours as part of planned tests of the aircraft’s controls and systems.

During these test flights, crew members check the functionality of the 787’s onboard systems at high and medium altitudes. They also check backup and critical safety elements, including cabin pressurization, avionics, navigation and communications systems.

Sunday’s flight is part of a series of work that Boeing performs after each 787 comes out of its paint hangar and before airlines take delivery of the planes. The work also includes fueling, systems tests, engine runs and taxi tests.

As the North American launch customer, we plan to take delivery of our first 787 in late September. We have firm orders for a total of 50 Dreamliners.

Visit the media gallery on the Flying Together home page to watch a video recapping our 787 “first look” event earlier this month.

Amsterdam, Tokyo, Lagos, London and Shanghai are the first international cities we’ll serve with the newest addition to our fleet, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This weekend, we’re loading the 787 into our schedule for the following routes:

•IAH to AMS (Amsterdam) between Dec. 4 and March 29, 2013
•Daily service between LAX and NRT, beginning Jan. 3, 2013
•IAH to LOS (Lagos, Nigeria), five days a week, beginning Jan. 7, 2013
•IAH to LHR (London Heathrow) between Feb. 4 and March 29, 2013
•Daily service between LAX and PVG (Shanghai), beginning March 30, 2013
The 787 will replace other aircraft types on each of these existing routes and will be reflected in our published schedules starting on Saturday.

The previously announced new service between DEN and NRT, which starts March 31, 2013, is already out for sale.

“The 787 is the right aircraft for these routes because of its many passenger-friendly amenities and superior operating economics,” Network SVP Greg Hart said. “With 50 787s on order, we look forward to the many new route opportunities that we will be able to offer to our customers in the future.”

As a mid-size aircraft with a long range, the 787 offers about the same capacity as a Boeing 767 but it can travel as far as the larger Boeing 777-200ERs. We will leverage the 787’s fuel efficiency and environmental advantages to serve markets that can’t support larger aircraft.

We will soon announce plans for 787 domestic flying, which will precede international flights.

I have just added a Boeing 787 Dreamliner database to www.16Right.com (http://www.16Right.com) that allows you to view the complete B787 production schedule, as well as searching by Registration, Airline or Engine Type. Clicking on the registration will take you to Airliners.net images of the aircraft. I have also added in the Hex Code.

View B787 Database (http://www.16right.com/B787%20Production.php)

The database has been built from the great B787 data and daily updates published by Puget Sound, and also from Boeing directly. The intention is to keep this as up to date as possible as production ramps up over the next few months.

I will probably do the same for the Boeing B747-8 Production.

FINALLY...

AILING state-run carrier Air India took delivery of its first 787-800 Dreamliner, joint statements from the airline and US manufacturer Boeing said, ending a four-year wait.
The handover - the first of 27 Dreamliners ordered by Air India - has been delayed since 2008 because of production problems at Boeing. The carrier and the firm were then involved in a public spat over compensation for the delay.

The 256-seater aircraft was received by top Air India officials in South Carolina in the United States. The Dreamliner will arrive in the Indian capital New Delhi on Saturday.

The Dreamliners mark an important phase for the loss-making airline because they will replace some older, fuel-guzzling planes.

Air India will also be able to fly to more foreign destinations to match other international airlines, analysts say.

"Today is a great day for Air India as the most technologically advanced and fuel-efficient airplane in the world joins our fleet," Air India's chairman and managing director Rohit Nandan said in a statement.

Air India - which emerged from a nearly two-month pilot strike in July - has been struggling to cut losses.

The carrier's once-dominant market share has shrunk to 18.2 per cent in the face of fierce competition from private and low-cost carriers that have taken to the air since India liberalised its commercial aviation sector in the 1990s.

In April, the government cleared a $US5.75 billion bailout package to help Air India, which has debts of $US8.3 billion.

Hey everyone, ESPECIALLY anyone who has flown in a B787!

Looking at the following pics on A.net, there seems to be a 'windowless' area, to the rear of the B788... Any ideas as to why there is no window, and is this a seat to be avoided if flying on the B788? Last year, did a trip on a MH B744, and seat 57K is a seat like this in that there is no window, yet they seem to be the only one with this model which doesn't have a window in this spot!

REAR of the 'no window':-

UAL B788 (http://www.airliners.net/photo/United-Airlines/Boeing-787-822-Dreamliner/2159166/L/) and ET B788 (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Ethiopian-Airlines/Boeing-787-860-Dreamliner/2155057/L/&sid=f6a8e2a99096d67783ce55e814ddeb67) (has two blocked out)

QR B788 (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Qatar-Airways/Boeing-787-8DZ-Dreamliner/2158820/L/) (has three then a blocked out)

LAN B788 (http://www.airliners.net/photo/LAN-Airlines/Boeing-787-816-Dreamliner/2159196/L/) and ANA B788 (http://www.airliners.net/photo/All-Nippon-Airways/Boeing-787-881-Dreamliner/2159430/L/) (has four rear of the 'no window')

Just curious as to different operational requirements and layouts...

Thanks!

From what I deduce from some drawings the "no window" is a production join.

As for the window blanks they are usually customer options and can be anything from a galley to a toilet on the other side and they blank the hole.:D

Mike W
14th September 2012, 08:26 AM
Surely, this is because there are no seats behind the blanks. For example, there's a toilet or galley or whatever there.

Not so much the 'blanks', as apart from the ANA with a window in the lav, I understand that, it was where, what Fred C mentioned, the 'Section Join' is that I was asking about... Hate to be on a long haul in that seat!

The space where there is no window is due to the air con riser ducts coming up from under the aircraft and into the ceiling. You will notice it on all the Boeing aircraft.

Fred C
14th September 2012, 06:57 PM
Normally I would agree with you Brendon. I had that thought but it is a very long way back for that sort of thing. As the aircon packs are under the centre wing box the risers are normally just fwd of the wing or over the wing. Aircon is ducted forward and aft in the cavity above the ceilings.

As I mentioned before it most likely is a production join.

Our Crews take 787 for a test drive :)
Posted September 25, 2012

Nearly 70 of our pilots are currently trained to fly the 787, becoming type-rated via classes and simulator sessions. After we took possession on Sunday, some of our pilots are flying the real thing on 787 training flights.

The Sunday through Tuesday flights allow our pilots to fly the aircraft after having completed a comprehensive ground and simulator-based 787 training program. MWH (Moses Lake, Wash.) is hosting most of the training flights. It is an excellent airport for such training due to its long runways and lack of air traffic congestion compared to most major civilian airports. On Friday, our pilots will fly the plane down to IAH.

“Although United’s 787 simulator is very realistic, there’s simply no substitute for being able to fly the aircraft,” said 787 Fleet Standards Manager Captain Dave Lundy.

The training flights are the next step in the extended process of achieving final certification for revenue operations of the 787. As we previously announced, we expect the 787 to enter revenue service on Nov. 4.

Our first 787 arrives at IAH
Posted September 28, 2012

Our first Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed at IAH on Friday afternoon as several dozen co-workers stood by the taxiway to cheer on the newest addition to our fleet. Upon arrival, a water cannon salute greeted the 787 to celebrate United becoming the first North American carrier to take delivery of a Dreamliner.

Customer Service Team Leader Debbie McCormick was one of our co-workers who greeted the flight. “This is the most remarkable aircraft. It’s going to do wonders on our international routes,” she said.

Inflight Supervisor Burton Powell said, “I’m very excited and proud to be part of the airline that brought the Dreamliner to the U.S. It shows that we’re trendsetters and that we have the latest and greatest. All other airlines are going to have to follow suit.”

Lead Customer Service Representative Johnny Johnson, a tractor driver on the Aircraft Move Team, said, “This airplane represents our airline as one. This is our common ground. It also makes us the top competitor. We’re not competing with other airlines – they’re going to be competing with us. Not only am I looking forward to flying on it, I’m looking forward to towing it.”

Operating as UA Flight 7708, the 787 took off from Boeing Field in Seattle, with 787 Fleet Standards Manager Captain Dave Lundy and Boeing 787 Assistant Fleet Manager Niels Olufsen behind the controls, completing the journey to IAH in about four hours.

“The 787 is an amazing airplane with unparalleled advances in safety, efficiency and passenger comfort – a level of sophistication beyond that of the Starship Enterprise,” said Dave, who has served in his role for four years. “As exciting as flying the aircraft is, the success of United, Boeing and the FAA working together to bring this aircraft to life has been equally gratifying. My profound thanks to all the dedicated people associated with this project.”

We now begin a month-long training and certification program that includes non-commercial flights to several of our domestic hubs. As we induct the initial aircraft into the fleet, they will be based at IAH and will enter into previously announced domestic service in November and international service in December. We’ve scheduled our inaugural 787 flight to depart IAH for ORD Nov. 4.

This 787 is the first of five Dreamliners we expect to receive in 2012 out of a total of 50 we have on order. The aircraft features 36 seats in United BusinessFirst, 70 seats in United Economy Plus and 113 seats in United Economy.

See Jeff’s Journal for information on the 787's advantages. For more about the Dreamliner, visit the new United 787 site under Our Fleet & Cabins on the Corporate tab. Here, you’ll learn about the 787’s initial routes, customer-friendly features, environmental advantages and more.

A recent passenger in-flight survey revealed that 40.4% of passengers selected their flights specifically to fly on the 787

This seems to be a very high number. Has anyone flown on a ANA 787 and seen the survey? I'd be very interested to see how the question/s were worded and the method of answering.

None-the-less some impressive results. An extra 1% in fuel savings over what is expected is an incredible amount! Probably pay for the 11 new 789's in the long run.

On Newshour it was reported that the FAA are to conduct a full review of the B787 production and parts procurement, sub assemblies and especially the electrical systems which in the 787 is very extensively used to replace flight controls that are normally hydraulically operated. It will take several months but the FAA still maintain that the aircraft is 'safe' but have had to respond to many recent incidents including the 2 JAL ones but there have been brake problems, cracks in cockpit windows, fuel leaks from engines etc.

Although not explicitly mentioned by the FAA in its statement: http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=14233 the focus will be in the charging cycle for the lithium ion batteries, as they are known to overheat if over charged. The charging mechanism therefore needs to have an overcharge/heat sensing capacity to quickly cut the charging if the battery is overheating.

The fire problem is caused by the fact that a by product of combustion of the battery's components is oxygen, which of course makes it very difficult to extinguish the flames.

Rowan McKeever
17th January 2013, 09:14 PM
Is it likely the short term fix will involve using a different (ie not Li-ion) battery, say a derivative of what the 777 & other comparable aircraft have? Or could it be a procedural fix so that airlines would use a GPU, rather than an on-board battery, to start the APU?

Just thinking out loud really & wondering what others' thoughts are :)

Steve Bottom
18th January 2013, 09:54 AM
I put this up on a facebook site, but expand the size of the battery and you get an indication of the problem fire fighters would have.

Not the normal topic of conversation on here, BUT , we all love flying and these batteries are every where now, so in that 1 in a million chance your on a plane and someones phone of computer starts to smoke, this could help .....

So, you've taken all the correct precautions when charging, but a battery burst. What happens now?

Firstly, remember the days of High School chemistry class? Lithium is an alkali metal- and as a result it's very reactive. Once a lithium fire starts, it's incredibly hard to put out.

The WORST thing you can do is to throw water on it. Lithium will react with the water to produce hydrogen gas, which will only intensify the fire.

The other problem is that most household extinguishing agents don't do terribly much for a lithium fire either. Being a Class D fire (combustible metal), most extinguishing agents will react in an adverse way to it (e.g. water and foam), or will not work at all. (e.g. dry chemical*)

*There is a difference between dry chemical and dry powder. The terms are not interchangeable.

Metal fires will often burn hot enough to be able to strip the oxygen from CO2 and continue burning. They will also break down Halon and related agents into hydrogen chloride into other toxic compounds. Sodium Bicarbonate (Class BC dry chemical) and ammonium monophosphate (class ABC dry chemical) extingushers have little to no effect.

In the heat of a fire the chemicals in lithium ion batteries may also decompose to form lithium metal. This lithium metal combusts more violently than lithium compounds, and also releases dense lithum oxide smoke, which is an irritant.

Extinguishing these fires isn't an easy task. Better not let the fire start in he first place- however, sometimes accidents do happen. Short of investing in a (very expensive) Class D dry powder extinguisher, there's not much common fire extinguishers can do.

When fires do happen, you've got two options- dry sand, or dry table salt. Both work equally well in large amounts. You will need at least two kilos, with 3 or 4 if you have lots of batteries stored together.

Note the emphasis on the word dry. The extinguishing agent must be kept in an enclosed container, free from all moisture before use. Any water, even miniscule amounts, will react with the lithium and intensify the fire. One of the best options is to store it in one of those larger cookie jars with the rubber seal on the lid. Do not expose the extinguishing agent to the atmosphere.

I work as a fire investigator, specifically investigating electrical fires.

I need to be careful what I say in a public forum such as this but suffice it to say that I have investigated way too many fires which have originated in lithium batteries.

There are very strict regulations with regard to the carriage of lithium batteries on aircraft. In the US, other than in cellphones and similar devices you can not carry lithium batteries on a passenger aircraft. Quite literally you are not even permitted to ship a box of cellphones on a passenger aircraft.

It therefore surprises me that lithium batteries are actually being used as part of the aircraft system.

Probably the most dangerous are lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries. Obviously these are not used in the 787 but take a look at this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixIOEPnsgbI) and see what a lithium polymer battery can do, simply by overcharging it.

The NTSB has just released this update on its investigation into the Lithium Ion battery incident at Logan Airport

January 20, 2013
WASHINGTON - The National Transportation Safety Board today released a third update on its investigation into the Jan. 7 fire aboard a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 at Logan International Airport in Boston.

The lithium-ion battery that powered the auxiliary power unit has been examined in the NTSB Materials Laboratory in Washington. The battery was x-rayed and CT scans were generated of the assembled battery. The investigative team has disassembled the APU battery into its eight individual cells for detailed examination and documentation. Three of the cells were selected for more detailed radiographic examination to view the interior of the cells prior to their disassembly. These cells are in the process now of being disassembled and the cell's internal components are being examined and documented.

Investigators have also examined several other components removed from the airplane, including wire bundles and battery management circuit boards. The team has developed test plans for the various components removed from the aircraft, including the battery management unit (for the APU battery), the APU controller, the battery charger and the start power unit. On Tuesday, the group will convene in Arizona to test and examine the battery charger and download nonvolatile memory from the APU controller. Several other components have been sent for download or examination to Boeing’s facility in Seattle and manufacturer’s facilities in Japan.

Finally, examination of the flight recorder data from the JAL B-787 airplane indicate that the APU battery did not exceed its designed voltage of 32 volts.

In accordance with international investigative treaties, the Japan Transport Safety Board and French Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses pour la sécurité de l'aviation civile have appointed accredited representatives to this investigation. Similarly, the NTSB has assigned an accredited representative to assist with the JTSB’s investigation of the Jan. 15 battery incident involving an All Nippon Airways B-787. Both investigations remain ongoing.

Further investigative updates on the JAL B-787 incident will be issued as events warrant.

Somewhat hopeful news for the B787.

Philip Argy

A few things are looming as likely from the NTSB's findings to date:

GS Yuasa is going to have to redesign the battery so that the 8 cells are thermally isolated from each other, and from the case. Then Thales are going to have to put in place more rigorous monitoring of the individual cell states of charge, as it seems that a short circuit in one cell (which triggered this event) was accompanied by a loss of voltage from the 32 volt battery equivalent to the 4 volts contributed by that cell. And then Boeing is going to have to devise a containment enclosure for the battery that will effectively contain any smoke or fire that emanates from the battery.

And then there will need to be a round of certification testing of those components and systems.

Net result is that the 787 will not be returning to flight any time soon, although perhaps some workaround might be possible in terms of an enhanced containment/extiguishment enclosure for the existing battery. There will need to be two of these because although the same model battery is used for the APU and the backup main battery, their location and enclosures are different at the moment - the APU battery at the rear and the backup battery in the avionics bay under the cockpit.

The question of who will wear the massive damages bill being incurred by JAL, ANA and United Airlines will in due course become very interesting. There seem to be degrees of contribution likely from GS Yuasa as battery manufacturer, Thales as system integrator, and Boeing as supplier. Product liability insurers will probably argue over their contributions and policy limits.

Would love to arbitrate or mediate this one!

At the rate damages are accruing Boeing could just give its customers an open account with Duracell and rig up a holder to take 22 D cells (or AA if D is too big) to be swapped out after each flight.

The battery packs are hardly used - one is a backup power supply and the other just a kick starter for the APU.

The Japanese investigation has discovered incorrect wiring between the APU battery and the main battery - in other words the two Li ion batteries were actually interconnected, and wrongly:

NTSB RELEASES INTERIM FACTUAL REPORT ON JAL 787 BATTERY FIRE INVESTIGATION AND ANNOUNCES FORUM AND INVESTIGATIVE HEARING

March 7, 2013
WASHINGTON – Today, the National Transportation Safety Board released an interim factual report and 499 pages of related documents in its ongoing investigation of the Japan Airlines 787 battery fire in Boston. Additionally, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman announced today that the NTSB will be holding both a forum and a hearing in April to provide additional information to advance the investigation.

"With the grounding of the 787 fleet, concurrent international incident investigations, redesign and re-certification activities taking place simultaneously, it is essential to provide the aviation community, policy makers and the public with the factual information we are developing," said Hersman. “Releasing an interim report provides a window into the significant investigative work that has been accomplished so far."

The forum, which will be held in mid-April, will explore lithium-ion battery technology and transportation safety. The investigative hearing, to be held later in April, will focus on the design and certification of the 787 battery system.

"The information developed through the upcoming forum and the hearing will help the NTSB and the entire transportation community better understand the risks and benefits associated with lithium batteries, and illuminate how manufacturers and regulators evaluate the safety of new technology,” Hersman said.

Both proceedings, which will be held at the NTSB Board Room and Conference Center in Washington, will be webcast live and will be open to the public. Additional details about each event, including dates, times, agendas and participants, will be released in the coming weeks.

The 48-page interim factual report summarizes the NTSB’s initial findings on the JAL battery fire investigation. The report includes details on how the maintenance personal discovered the fire and how the firefighters responded and extinguished it, findings from the examination of the battery and test results of related components, initial reports on the flight recorder data, a description of the 787 electrical power system certification plan, and a list of ongoing and planned investigative activities.

The other documents released today provide additional details on various aspects of the investigation. All of these documents are available in the NTSB’s JAL 787 public docket, which was opened today: http://go.usa.gov/2Dck (http://go.usa.gov/2Dck).
As the investigation progresses, additional factual materials will be added to the docket. The analysis of the factual information already provided as well as that yet to be developed, will be completed at a later date.

Additional information related to the JAL 787 battery fire investigation is available on a web page dedicated to that incident: http://go.usa.gov/4K4J (http://go.usa.gov/4K4J).

Hopefully a return to the air soon....

US air-safety regulators have approved Boeing's plan to fix 787 batteries for testing, a major step forward to get the planes, grounded worldwide, flying again.
"The Federal Aviation Administration today approved the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company's certification plan for the redesigned 787 battery system ... and the company's plan to demonstrate that the system will meet FAA requirements," the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The FAA said it had given the green light after "thoroughly reviewing" the plan Boeing proposed on February 22 to address risks after lithium-ion batteries short circuited on two 787 Dreamliner aircraft in mid-January, with a fire erupting on one.

The incidents forced the grounding of all 50 787s in service worldwide.

"The certification plan is the first step in the process to evaluate the 787's return to flight," The FAA said.

It "requires Boeing to conduct extensive testing and analysis to demonstrate compliance with the applicable safety regulations and special conditions."

Boeing will run a series of tests and be allowed "limited" test flights for two aircraft equipped with prototype versions of the battery fix, it said.

"This comprehensive series of tests will show us whether the proposed battery improvements will work as designed," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in the statement.

"We won't allow the plane to return to service unless we're satisfied that the new design ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers."

Watching the live Boeing webcast (http://787updates.newairplane.com/Certification/Webcast)from Tokyo on the Dreamliner battery testing plan.

Mike Sinnet - Chief Project Engineer, 787 Programs

B787 has two power generators on each engine.
B787 has two power generators on the APU.
B787 has Ram Air generator if above fail.
Li Batteries are only used on the ground to start systems, and provide brake power and nav light power when under tow.
Li batteries earned their way onto the Dreamliner and are a good operational battery choice.
Only minor damage in both aircraft incidents.
A cell vented in both incidents to manage temperature and pressure, and this venting propagated to other cells. Venting is a design feature of the battery system, and gases go overboard.
The batteries were fully charged and not overcharged. Four layers of protection, two in the battery and two in the charger.
500 engineers working on battery issue by the end of the first week - Boeing engineers and externals.
They developed a broad and comprehensive set of solutions (over 200,000+ hours)
Re-evaluated and challenged the original design.
Solution has three layers of protection 1. Initial cell venting, 2. Stop venting propagation, 3. Airpland not impacted by 1 and/or 2.
Battery and cell build process strengthened, and production testing enhanced.
Changed battery charger and monitor setup to lower the upper charge level and raise the lower discharge level.
Significant battery design changes covering a number of areas.
Charger modified to provide a more gentle charging wave form.
Finally, a new external enclosure prevents any possible fire, retains vented gases and disposes them overboard.
Now one third of the way through new enclosure, and very happy with results.
Enclosure prevents and initiation, propagation and impact on the aircraft itself.
A very cool and thorough presentation by Mike, and plenty of challenging questions afterwards.

The new solution adds about 35kg of weight per battery which suggests a significantly more hefty battery and containment system. Boeing also seems to be confident that the FAA grounding will be lifted by mid to end of April once their re-certification testing regime has been completed.

I somehow don't think he meant bag chuckers. But if Qantas, Aerocare, Menzies, Toll Dnata, Virgin Aust. etc don't think they'll get paid on time for their services, then you could understand their caution. I don't know the history of them in this country, but are they renowned for being 'late' on payments?

With all the recent 787 issues one has to question whether Qantas/Jetstar were actually lucky not to receive their 787s on time.

Honeywell have joined the Ethiopian B787 investigation team, as their ELT antenna is located in the middle of the most seriuous burn marks. Honeywell ELTs are certified by the FAA, and there has never been any reported incidents on the product. Other systems supplied by Honeywell include the Emergency Ligthing, Terrain Awareness, Navigation, and nacelle anti-ice regulators. The Honeywell ELT is powered by a non-rechargable lithium manganese-dioxide battery, and the FAA has recorded at least one thermal runaway incident with a lithium manganese battery (in a UPS package).

Interesting article on composite repair by Aviation Week

787 Fire Repair Boosts Composites Confidence (http://www.aviationweek.com/Article.aspx?id=/article-xml/AW_03_03_2014_p36-666160.xml)

On the morning of July 12, 2013, the quiet atmosphere of Boeing's 787 Operations Control Center (OCC) in Everett, Wash., was broken by a phone call from British Airways at London Heathrow Airport. The caller asked if Boeing knew there was smoke coming from a 787 parked at the airport.

From Flight Global (http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/wing-cracks-found-on-787s-in-assembly-396787/) ...

Roughly 40 Boeing (http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Boeing.html) 787s (http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/Boeing%20787.html) still in production may have cracks within shear ties of a wing rib, the company says.

It goes on.

Some day we'll look back at this from a perspective of an incredible program that has helped Airlines' profitability all over the world, much like we do with another game changing air frame, the 747.

This also brings into question the global nature of aircraft production today. It would seem strange to me that a process relating to wing manufacture by sub-contractor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, could be changed on a currently operational certified aircraft. Surely process changes of this nature would have the tighest of controll around the integrity and consistency of the build.

By which time QF will only have old A330's and hard to fill A380's flying. :-(

Air New Zelaland's first B787-9 has just emerged from the paint shop and looking very nice.

Hopefully we will see this aircraft doing some test flight across the ditch.

Interesting Grahame, that this is entirely black, in comparison to the repaint on 772 OKC in black and white.
Thanks for sharing, and nice to meet you at the weekends' event.

Grahame,

Do you know why VKE hasn't flown as yet ?

Their current fleet paint scheme is either full black or half and half.

Greg, My contact at Boeing tells me that Jetstar's Dreamliner VH-VKE is scheduled for its First Flight tomorrow.

Thanks Grahame,

Was any reason given for the delay ?

It seems to have spent an extended period of time on the pre-flight ramp.

It was about two months from rollout for this scheduled first flight, an unusually long time based on current production timelines. I was not given any reason, presumably because the details may be confidential to Boeing, or between Boeing and Qantas/Jetstar.

It will be interesting to see if it gets up in the next 24 hours.
