Default 747-400 without winglets? Is that possible?

Saw this photo of the ANA "Pokemon" livery today and aircraft was described as a 744 but no winglets. Wasn't sure if they made them without winglets or not.

This is a 747-400D (Domestic). This model targets the Japanese domestic market, ideal for high payload and short range flight. Winglets are effective on long haul flight but not short haul flight hence the absence of the winglets. They are designed that way.

Thanks for asking that question Nick, I didn't know about the 400D version.

How many are actually still flying and do we know what configuration they have? Not sure I would like to be on one with 660 people onboard.

Cheers

M

It's actually pretty cool if you get a seat on the upper deck (configured to economy). The smaller cabin is more cosy and with a window seat there is plenty of storage space between the seat and the window.

What's the difference on 1hr flight??

As per configuration all you need to do is type 747-481D into A.net search bar.

Those jets must get really tired really quickly doing all those short hops/cycles.

They also remove the winglets for some Qantas flights too. It's done down at Avalon during maintenance.......
