Default Time required to transit LAX for connecting flight?

I am booked on United 840 to LA, which lands at 9.50am and then I will be connecting to United 847 to Washington which departs at 12.45.

I assume considering the United booking engine gave me these flights that is sufficient time to connect and clear customs/immigration?

It is probably a little tight - you are relying heavily on the first flight arriving on time. I don't know what the INTL arrival is like at that terminal, not sure it if is better/worse than the TBIT. The fact you are not changing terminals is a plus.

I have travelled domestically in the US on UA. The terminal isn't too bad but the security line is always a killer. Do you need to get a boarding pass for the second flight or will you be issued one in Sydney?

To be safe, it is probably better to go for the next departure, even if it adds an hour or two. I would be stressing the whole first flight about it arriving on time.

If both flights are on the same booking, United will take care of you if you miss your connecting flight.

You'll have to wait an additional 3 hours if you book the later flight, so you're probably better booking the earlier flight and if your inbound flight is late, let United sort it out for you and book you on the later flight or onto another carrier.

The legal minimum connection time on a UA to UA transfer on the same ticket is 70 minutes.

Yep all connections are on the same ticket, so it's good to know they will look after me if something goes wrong.

Thanks for the replies guys.
