Sadly, I can't see solar ever being the sole power source for an aircraft (at least not directly). The main problem is the weight of the batteries needed to power the aircraft at night or under cloud. It is possible, however, that future aircraft will be powered by more conventional jet engines, just with the fuel source switching to Hyrogen fuel cells, with the Hydrogen generated with solar power...
I'll be really interested to see how the aircraft performs through the night stage of the flight - if they can make it through the night then the aircraft could theoretically keep flying for days and days on end.
